1.2842 (90MnCrV8)

Properties

The most widely used universal tool steel for cutting and pressing tools. It features the dimensional stability during heat treatment and good hardenability in oil. Good combination of high surface hardness and toughness after quenching and tempering treatment. It is wear resistant, with the good cutting property. Very good hot formability and good machinability in the annealed condition.
The steel is suitable for making of tools with good durability and low operation costs.
The steel is suitable also for polishing.
The steel for cold working.

Strength 740 MPa.
Hardness in the soft annealed condition max. 220 HB.
Obtainable hardness after quenching 63 HRC.

Application

Tools for cold cutting, i.e. all sorts of tools for cutting on press and punching of materials with smaller thicknesses, particularly complicated in shape punching dies and cutting punches, requiring very good dimensional stability during heat treatment.
Shear blades for cutting of materials of smaller thicknesses, disc and circular cutting tools for paper cutting etc.
Tools for cold forming, i.e. tools for bending, rolling, drawing and stamping of materials of small of thicknesses.
Small moulds for forming of plastic materials and rubber, less stressed moulds for forming of powder masses, pottery and ceramic materials.
All types of measuring instruments, templates, calibers, rulers. Guide fences, guide skirt boards, skids, slide ways, traversing guides. Simple folding and pressing tools. Plates for single-purpose machines construction.
